Young Driver Scheme Scoops Award
Luton council are leading the way in young driver safety, with an innovative new educational scheme.
Called the MORE courses, the programme has recently won the Education and Training Initiative of the Year award at the FirstCar Young Driver Road Safety Awards.
The FirstCar Awards win is just the latest in a string of awards for the MORE courses, which also won the Prince Michael International Road Safety Award.
The MORE courses are organised by the Central Beds Council, Luton Borough Council and Amey and are aimed at offering young drivers the opportunity to improve their skills and knowledge, hopefully reducing road deaths and casualties.
Alex Constantinides, head of engineering and street services at Luton Borough Council said: “We’ve run the MORE courses for the past couple of years, and are pleased that they’ve been so popular locally and always receive good feedback from attendees.”
Marcel Coiffait, director of community services at Central Beds, added: “To win this award is a fantastic achievement and a great recognition of not only the hard work of all those involved, but also the success of the courses and the impact they have on those who attend.”
Two varieties of MORE courses are available to young drivers, with allocation being dependent on the age of the applicant. MORE 16 is designed to give 16-year-olds their first experience of driving, whilst MORE Drive is aimed at 17 to 30-year-olds who have already passed their driving test.
