Theory test to be refreshed with CGI

The British driving test looks set to be the subject of another shake-up, with CGI clips to be introduced to the theory test.

The organising body behind the driving test, the Driver & Vehicle Standards Agency (DVSA), has confirmed that CGI clips will be utilised as part of the theory test’s hazard perception element early this year.

The hazard perception test has traditionally been made up of pre-filmed video clips and it is these segments that are to be refreshed with CGI.

The move comes as the DVSA acknowledge that whilst the scenarios featured in the filmed segments are still relevant, the image quality is now substandard. The introduction of CGI therefore is seen as a way of creating clearer and better defined images, whilst also allowing for updated vehicles, road signs to be introduced.

Smaller, moving hazards that were previously difficult to capture in a reasonable quality, such as children and cyclists, will see the biggest improvement, whilst Varying road and weather conditions will also become part of the exams make-up.

Alastair Peoples, DVSA chief executive, said: “The theory test plays an essential role in making sure that new drivers know the Highway Code and the rules of the road. Research has shown how effective the hazard perception test is in reducing the number of crashes involving newly qualified drivers.

“Using CGI clips in the hazard perception test will allow us to present clearer, more up to date situations, ensuring the test fully reflects the realities of modern day driving.”
