Van Gogh inspired cycle path is lighting up the Netherlands
Using solar power and photo-luminescent paint, Studio Roosegaard has created a practical change to the landscape with a dreamy aesthetic.
The cycle path forms part of the Van Gogh cycle route that connects the Vincent van Gogh heritage locations in Brabant, Vincent’s Homeland.
Together with the artist Daan Roosegaarde, Heijmans developed special innovative technology with which the path will be illuminated by thousands of twinkling stones. The path stays lit for up to 10 hours once night falls.
Rather than use lights, Roosegaard uses a paint to create this effect. The paint absorbs solar energy during the day then illuminates at night.
It has been used previously on Roosegaard’s Smart Highway pilot, where similar technology is used to create safer and environmentally friendly roads.
He’s also looking to make the Smart Highway paint reactive to temperature, in order to indicate to drivers when roads are icy.
Roosegaarde says, “I wanted to create a place that people will experience in a special way, the technical combined with experience.”
The path has been opened as part of the international year of Van Gogh in 2015, the 125th anniversary of the artist's death.
