What to Wear to Stay Safe on Your Cycling Commute
So, you have decided to take the plunge and commute to work by bike?
Wearing the correct equipment, particularly on these dark Autumn mornings and evenings, is of paramount importance as a cyclist must be visible and practical as they head to and from the office.
Evanscycles.com offers a list of essentials required, including some vital pieces to help you stand out from a dark backdrop:
Bike Helmet
There may be a range of commuting helmets, but any standard one would suffice. However, there are a range of options when it comes to increasing your visibility; certain ones have reflective tape details, while others have a fully reflective surface.
Waterproof jacket
Most cycling jackets have high visibility at the core of their designs, with bright colours and reflective elements essential to boost awareness. Covering a large portion of the cyclist’s body, a bright, eye-catching jacket is a must.
If you’re planning to cycle commute all year round, and in all weathers, look for something that is waterproof and windproof.

Lights
A legal requirement when cycling in the dark, it is imperative to have your bike suitably lit and visible to traffic and pedestrians. It is necessary to have a white light on the front and a red one on the back of the bicycle, allowing you to be seen from the front and behind by those around you.
Gloves
As temperatures plummet heading toward Winter, the need for suitable gloves, in terms of safety, increases. Being able to use your hands to control the direction of the bike and react quickly to unfolding situations is hugely important. This is particularly exacerbated during wet weather, when the cold temperatures and the wet make for numb hands and less control of the bike.
High-viz bands
There are a variety of high-viz bands which can be purchased to highlight your presence on the road when cycling. Armbands, strip vests, belts, trouser clips, wristbands and ankle bands are all available with reflective, high-viz elements. These allow other road users and pedestrians to see in advance that you are there so they can adjust their behaviour to suit the impending situation.
There are a number of options for staying safe while commuting by bike in the dark. By following the guidance and advice, and equipping yourself with the necessary gear, you will ensure your safety and the safety of other road users and pedestrians.
