London's Lorry Ban

A new ban, to be brought in by the end of the year, will disallow lorries to travel in the capital unless they’re fitted with safety equipment designed to protect vulnerable cyclists.

The RAC reports: “Transport for London (TfL) and local authorities have jointly agreed the new traffic ban, which will come into play by the end of the year affecting all lorries above 3.5 tonnes.”

Examples of specifically designed safety equipment include sideguards and additional mirrors to enhance driver view.

It is understood that the ban will be enforced with the help of CCTV and on-street checks.

The move will be welcomed by cycling commuters in the capital, which saw 14 cyclist fatalities last year.

Gavin Lynn of Winn Solicitors explains: “We’ve seen a rise in the number of cyclists seeking claim advice following an accident on the road. The introduction of this ban could be the beginning of a national roll out aimed at protecting vulnerable British cyclists”.
