150 Fined in Cycling Clampdown

After the recent spate of fatalities amongst cyclists on London’s roads Met Police have clamped down on reckless cyclists this month according the BBC website.

Known as Operation Safeway, the deployment of 166 Met Police officers to key road junctions in the capital resulted in a reported 150 fixed penalty notices for cyclists not adhering to road safety laws.

Earlier in November, six cyclists were killed in 14 days rekindling the debate as to whether enough is being done in the UK to both regulate and protect cyclists. Members of the cycling community have long campaigned for the Government to take action to make commuting by bike a safer option for workers. In contrast to this, others including Tory peer Lord James have depicted cyclists as a menace on the roads, and “longing to be run over.

The Met Police confirmed that the majority of the offences related to the use of mobile phones and ignoring red lights.
