Is the comfort of your car driving you to distraction?

Modern cars are “too much like lounges” and that the comfort and technology that comes with modern cars may be distracting to motorists, says the Institute of Advanced Motorists (IAM).

Although helpful devices such as the sat-nav have aided many motorists in safely and easily navigating their way from A to B, IAM has suggested that many Brits could learn from the US as their motoring guidelines explain that motorists should refrain from using certain technology whilst the car is in motion and advise car manufacturers to lose the distracting interior technology.

Sarah Sillers, of IAM, said: “As things stand in the UK, easy social media and website connectivity, tablet like smartphones and up to date GPS systems are worrying innovations."

US federal statistics have revealed that there were 3,331 deaths are 387,000 injuries in 2011 as a result of distraction related road accidents. This distraction problem is said to be more common amongst teens.

Ms Sillars added; “Such figures can not be replicated in the UK, on-going education is the answer to meeting the growing challenge presented by constantly shifting technology”
