Drivers: Be Prepared as Cold Snap Hits

Drivers are being urged to take precautions as a cold snap takes hold of the country.

With temperatures plummeting below freezing – the Scottish Highlands recently recorded -9.1 Celsius overnight – the RAC is warning of a surge in breakdowns that can leave drivers stranded in the cold while awaiting recovery.

With a severe cold weather alert in place for England, it is important for drivers to be ready if they get stuck on the road.

Ice scraper and de-icer

Some of the more obvious necessities in winter, having these ensures you’re not driving with obscured vision. It is hugely important to have a clear windscreen with the best possible visibility at any time of the year, but especially so when winter comes around and the days get shorter with deteriorating conditions.

Warm clothes

By packing warm clothes and blankets, you know there are extra layers available if your vehicle were to breakdown by the side of the road, with a potentially long wait expected before roadside assistance. Pack some for passengers too just in case.

Jump start cables

A flat battery can occur at any time of the year but having jump cables can help get you up and running again quickly. Having them available allows you to call on a fellow motorist or friend or family member to help, which could be a faster option than waiting for roadside assistance.

Pre-journey check

If you’re setting off on a long journey, carry out a check of your vehicle, ensuring oil is topped up and screen wash fluid is readily available. With salt being spread on the roads to offset icy conditions, your windscreen will get dirty very quickly and need regular washing.

Checking tyre pressure is also a common pre-journey check, as is planning your journey to avoid getting caught in traffic hotspots at peak rush hour times.
