Safety Tips for Driving in High Winds
Over recent months, several storms have wreaked havoc across the UK, going by names such as Gertrude, Henry and Eva. For those who are required to drive in these conditions, it can be less than pleasant. Here are some tips to help you stay safe when driving in high winds:
Think About Your Route
Before you set off, take time to think about the best way to travel. In high winds, you may want to avoid any high-level bridges, and particularly exposed roads.
Bring Emergency Supplies
When driving in a storm, there is a possibility that it may worsen, leaving you stranded. Always ensure that you have warm clothes with you, and a charged mobile phone.
Slow Down
Drive with caution, especially in less sheltered areas – as your car, or another vehicle may move due to the impact of a strong gust of wind.
Overtake Carefully
Overtaking in high wind can be dangerous, especially when passing a high sided vehicle.
Keep Your Distance
Leave plenty of space between your vehicle and other road users, especially those vulnerable to the wind, such as cyclists and lorries.
Watch out for Debris
In high winds, there may well be trees, branches and other debris which has blown into your path. Keep an eye on the road ahead, and be prepared to brake or change direction suddenly.
